neighbor's cigarette creeps through my vent
while I try to sleep
they leave their trash in the hallway
when I bring mine down to the street
hot trash festering in garbage bins
every day of the god damn week
people I pass down the subway stairs
always smell like old cheese
smells of the city

the subway train reeks of homeless man:
puke, ball-sweat and feet
people leave their trash where they stand
and diapers on empty seats
smells of stale beer and dying rats mix with girl's perfume
someone's dropping farts in urine wash..
there is no elbow room
smells of the city

come above ground where some rotting fish
meets with bus fumes
pretzel vendors hang by gutter pools:
the trash-filled green lagoons
make my way home after a long day
and wade through rank produce
I swear that something died in my kitchen wall
but the landlord needs more proof
